D-17 models prior to serial# 32001 are unofficially called Series 1
29988 built
Series 2 started at 1960 serial # 32001 (9,540 built)
Series III started at 1962 serial # 42001 (9,126 built)
Series IV started at 1964 serial # 75001 and later (14,213 built)
Most common "major" problem is transmission jumping out of gear.Usually 3rd or 4 th due to wear on most used gears.Drive tractor down a hill in third and fourth gear while working throttle up and down.If it pops out of gear ,can be expensive to fix.
D series were very good dependable tractors and usually are very reliable.Like anything wear and neglect are the only real problems with these machines.

Series I = 1001 thru 31625 (1957-60)
Series II = 32001 thru 41540 (1960-62)
Series III = 42001 thru 72768 (1962-64)
Series IV = 75001 thru 89213 (1964-67)

Not alot of difference between a Series I and II. Wider swing drawbar ? maybe started with series I black bar grill models, little heavier bull gears, built in thumb guard on PD stick, Full flow oil filter I think actually started with the black bar grill Series I models.

Can't say any D17 suffers from a plague of any kind.

D17 is most versatile of the 3. Check to see if it pops out of gear, if the hand clutch has good snap and does it have power steering. Otherwise the same wear areas of any other tractor. Does it smoke, does the power steering work good, oil pressure. Pull all the dipsticks to check for water etc.

D17's in the real world never weighed 9395 lbs....that was Nebraska test weight on concrete. A series 4 with wide front and full fuild in the rear 16.9 x 28's with snap coupler hitch was around 6000 lbs if memory serves me.

Well the D17 is out it jumps out of two gears and it seems a little weak on power. I guess I will have to keep looking.

My series 1 weighs 5800lbs with 16.9-28s and fluid but no other weights.
