Lou, surely that 30 series came out with R 12. Apparently it has been converted?
If my nieghbor lets the 4240 go dry, it will take at least 4 cans to get her cooled down
One thing I noticed on the 40 series is that they have a drier with the sight guage on it in the right rear of the cab (outside of course).

Thanks for the input, Dave. I didn't get up into the cab yet, but the compressor is marked 134, so perhaps it has been changed. I'm specific trained for refrigeration, my company trained me to repair recharge our medical centrifuges, so I'm not real familiar with other stuff. The basics of course are the same, but the fittings, details, etc is what I'm missing. If it has a sight guage would make it real nice, fill till no bubbles and quit.........not as exact as super-heat but close enough. I'm assuming the NAPA automotive hoses/gauges will fit. Just so everyone knows this is not my tractor....I'd just hurt myself on something that big! ------------- I am still confident of this; I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Lou if it was retrofitted EPA correct the fittings will be the automotive 134 quick connects screwed on to the 1/4 inch standard refrigeration flare with schrader. I normaly unscrew the 134 fitting exposing the standard refrigeration fitting to use standard refrigeration gauges. the problem comes in with the can and charging with standard refrigeration gauges. I either use the 134 fitting and one of those 134 12ounce can charging hoses . Or I use one of those 12 ounce can charging hoses thats been cut into with a 1/8 copper 1/4schrader refrigeration fitting stuck up in the cut hose and secured with a hose clamp that way i can use my standard vacuum pump as well. Then after I screw the epa correct 134 fitting back on and untill now no one was in the know if you know what i mean . ps charge by subcooling or sight glass . superheat doesnt work if equiped with expansion valve . 1 degree of subcooling means the liquid line has no vapor but most run 10 degrees for insurance just like 1 degree of superheat means it vapor but most run 6 to 15 degrees f ------------- people if they don't already know it you can't tell them. quote yogi berra |

Thanks Mitch, The fittings on the pump look like standard 134 automotive, but are larger than the connectors on my NAPA 134 guage set.....like you said, maybe it will unscrew. | Lou,if you charge til the bubbles are gone in the sight glass,system will be way overcharged and will not cool.like Dave said,bout 4 cans will be good.if there is a leak you cannot find,theres a pipe that goes up the LH rear cab post that will rust out,its the return line and will condense moisture.I do not know why your gages will not fit,all 134 fittings should be the same |

Well, turns out, there was no sight glass on this one, so that was not an option in any case. Standard automotive 134 connectors were correct after all.......when they converted over from R12, and screwed the adapters on, the bolts holding the compressor together interfered with the newer connectors, not enough clearance between adapter and bolt end. Coulda' filed/ground bolt for clearance, but, I found it easier to remove adapters and just use standard refrigeration connections. High side had a Schrader valve under adapter, so two valves stacked on top of each other, low side Schrader valve in adapter only!?!?!? Put dye in it and guessed at a charge......it's working fine and no leaks visible. When we were removing the adapters, we noted that they were rather loose! probably where the leak was. I'm the third person to work on it and I have no idea what was done before. I told him to run it that way for awhile and if no leaks show up, we'll recover/evacuate and put proper charge in it ------------- I am still confident of this; I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. if the low pressure switch hasnt been changed to . you will have to over charge it to get any cooling .granted 134 wants 20 percent less than 12 but 20 percent less on a r12 suction pressure switch will never stayed made up long enough to have any cooling affect. ------------- people if they don't already know it you can't tell them. quote yogi berra |
