Hey there.
I am trying to set my WD45 up to pull. The pull's rules say Factory RPM + 10%.
Most places I see say the factory RPM should be 1400.
Other places are saying 1720, even as high as 1850. According to Agco parts, there are 3 different springs being available, and which RPM each spring will give you. 1400,1600,1800.
"std" is next to the 1400 spring, so I am assuming that is the standard one.
But, some information I found listing USAP & NATPA Rpm's, say WD45 standard is 1720.
Anyone know what the factory standard RPM's are suppose to be, and where I can print the literature to take to the pull for proof if I need it?
thanks.

I actually just came across some information in an I&T Shop Service manual, and it says
WD45 Engine High Idle is 1720rpm.
Which information should I go by??????

Terry Dean's book "Allis Chalmers Farm tractor Data Book" says " Rated RPM 1400"

Do you have a contact for the pull ? Call them and find out what they are going to use ?

The Nebraska test shows 1400 being rated RPM. I'm going to guess 1720 is max no load speed. I'd ask what the association allows.

Hi idle 1720 + 172 1892 rpm

yes, I'll have to do that at the pull, check their rules.
I am assuming the high idle speed, is when the engine is reved all the way, and no load on the tractor.
So if the book calls for 1720 as that setting, how are ratings being figured at 1400?

rated speed is still 1400 rpm.

so while I throttle up, and my RPM's go up to almost 1800 while just sitting there, it's still rated for 1400 RPM's?
I just don't understand how, and don't want to cut my idle back to 1400 RPM's and then have too little while pulling.

Look at a Nebraska test, rated rpm is pto speed. it is the lowest rpm that is recommended for continuous operation , to drag the engine any lower with a heavier load , would be overloading what Allis recommended.clear as mud, eh?

allis operating instructions reads high idle rpm 1677-1722 governed rpm 1400 that is how far the engine speed will drop before the governor has the carb wide open

OK guys, yes, clear as mud.
I'm no dummy when it comes to mechanics, even though I have to figure things out, and once I figure it out, then I'm good. Like rebuilding the carb was a breeze.
My manual said nothing about the governed RPM, so my tractor is high idling around what the manual says, so I should be good.
I thought it all meant that while at high idle, the max RPM that was going to be allowed, was the 1400 (which is the "rated" rpm).
Now I see that when under a load, where that 1400 comes from. I'm not sure how the track officials measure that though (when they do random checks).

Some pulls they won't let you pull without a PTO and at their discretion they will ask you to hook up . They are the ones who will check to see u don't exceed 540 rpm. Most pulls want you to have a peice of reflective tape on your front pully so they can check rpm electronicaly with a laser at hi idle.
My tractors have always been set to factory spec hi idle, I don't feel that 10 over is needed with a 3.5 mph speed limit. A wd45 makes peak tourque at around 900 rpm anyway. Put a tach on your tractor and check where you feel from the seat where power drops past the point of recovery[ provideing the load would stay constant]. An engine vacuum gauge might be interesting to watch too during a pull , I'm thinking of adding one.

I have a tach on mine. I just installed it so that I can make sure its set up right.
This old of a tractor, who knows what spring is in the governor.
I haven't had a way to "work" the tractor yet. The first workout it will get with me, will be pulling the sled.
the speed limit here is 3.5 also.
What classes do you pull, and in what gear do you pull them?
thanks.

I remember posts like this. There is a paint stripe on the spring that goes to the part # and model. Also if you have a front spring cover from ? d17 ? that has a limiter bolt in it. Anyone else got a good set up to tell him??

I was just trying to figure out what the RPM setting was suppose to be.
Then, since Gary in da UP mentioned torque and that he pulls with a 3.5 mph rule to, I was wondering how well he pulled in each class with which gear.

With my wd45 I pulled in 2nd gear in 3500, 4 & 4500, it would have pulled 3500 in 3rd but for the speed limit .In 3rd the transfer machine snuck up pretty fast and too much throttle I'd spin. With my D17 I pull in low 2nd for 3.5 mph class's. Last year I only went to one pull & took a buddy, we both pulled the D17 in 4500, 3.5., 20" drawbar. Over thirty entries in that class, my bud took 1st at 106' and was 3' beyond 2nd place, i went 116' but Dq'd, as I was on the line when I stopped.. The year before ,same pull I took 2nd, my buddy took 4th , only an ollie 88 got past me, by less than a foot. Again over 30 tractors in that class. I have a decent tractor, lots of power, but reading the track, tire pressure, balance, and knowing when and how much to pour it on are I feel what helps me the most.

I pull my wd45 in first gear, Division II (stock). I have wheely bars and suitcase weights. Division I would be wheel weights only.
The high idle RPM is 1677 - 1722 plus 10 percent. The word "idle" means NO LOAD, then with a working load it is 1400 RPM. Hope this helps.

Around here (SWOH) Im allowed (by the charts they have) 1760 based on the 1600rpm high idle. I run 2300 and can trip a 3.5mph limit in first gear with 14.9-26 or 13.6-28s. I was accused of using second gear with 15.5-38s, in an open mph pull.
