will an r50 handle it? or need an r60?

You will need an R60 the R50 will not have the hydraulics to raise the header.

A customer of Peterson Implement used to have an R50 with an 8 row. I think it was narrow though and I think it had optional lift assist cylinder.

Seen some 52's with 8 rows, so a 50 should handle it, especially on flat ground, but hydraulics may be an issue as others mentioned.
