There is a very nice 180 gas at Isaacson Implement in Nerstrand MN, not sure if it is close to your location or not.  It was just recently traded in and is very nice original.

I was there yesterday.  It's not as nice as the picture indicates, a lot of welding and leaking fluid and an early model not late as indicated.

Have you ever owned a 180 gas??  Run a 180 diesel for 30 minutes and youd never go back, a diesel really shouldn't cost much more and with any use at all you will get the diference back in fuel savings.

a gas is ok at least you don't have to worry about the antifreeze eating away the block. it just depends what you want to use it for.

Anti-freeze in a diesel eating the block? Enlighten me.

I just had to completely rebuild the block in my 6080 because the antifreeze had eaten away around the sleeves and allowed the antifreeze to leak past the 0-rings into the oil.  John Deere has an additive to prevent this from happening.

I Googled this topic (diesel engine damage by improper antifreeze coolant) and found some interesting findings. I assume this is only on "wet sleeve" engines? Is the 2800 (301 cid) in the 180 a "wet sleeve" engine? I ask because I bought a 180D in February.

My understanding is the combustion process creates pressure spikes in the cylinder sleeve and the rapid flexing of the sleeve can cause a partial vacuum then pressuring of the void between the cylinder sleeve and block. During this process it can create air/water pockets that burst at pressures of up to 60,000 psi, this is what causes the pitting and erosion of the cylinder sleeves. Cold weather starts can further compound this issue because of the increased tolerances between parts until at operation temp.

Good news is it happens to on-the-road vehicles more than off-the-road vehicles and stationary power units because of the constant loads and engine speeds. I will check my coolant more often and also check the formulas I buy.

Two of my Uncles have 180 gas tractors and they are very nice tractors, good for winter and both have loaders.  One uncle also has a diesel as do I and both versions have their benefits.  Hope you can find one.  Seems to be a few on Tractorhouse.  The 180 gas tractors were only made in 1969.

As far as the antifreeze eating through all you have to do is put a water filter on it and that will take care of the problem, i know because over the years i rebuilt a 190,180, 7020 all because of this. Then when i bought a 7045 new we put the filter on it and run it over10000 hrs with no problem.

Once the pitting has started the filter isn't as effective.

I was just reading an auction bill here and there is a 180 Gas on an upcoming auction.  The auction is consignment and located at Kenyon MN on June 4.  You can view the bill at www.maringauction.com  There were no pictures of it, but you may give them a call for details.
