A buddy of mine picked up a used cam for a wd 45 at the LeSuer swap meet in minn.  Got the bad one out (thanks to Dr Allis) the band around the push rods worked great, but the 2 cams are different.  The original has a disc on the front that the timing gear conects to with 3 bolts but the replacment doesnt.  Replacement is threaded in the center.  Would the disc on the bad pull off?  I put a puller on and some pressure but would'nt budge.  Looks as if I need a different cam, any sugestions on where to track down a new or used would be appreciated.

Thanks Hardscrable

There were different cams used on different serial number engines.
I don't think that piece comes off.
What is the casting number on the cam you want to replace?

The casting # is u3027,  from what I can tell from looking at valu built parts book that casting # is for a WD.  This is an earily 45 (1954) sn 39029, maybe these had WD style cams.

The WD's and the early WD45's had the bolt on camshaft gear (three bolts) and the later WD45's had the pressed on camshaft gear that has a keyway. They both come apart. The tooth count is the same on both gears and I could never see any differences in the standard camshafts. I'm pretty sure that they'll interchange though. If anyone knows any better please let us know...Dr. Allis or anyone?  Rick

That serial number is way off.
Are you sure you have a 45.
Look on the right side {Pass Side}} of the engine and see if there is a steel plate bolted to the block that runs the whole lenght of the block just under the head.

What is the engine block serial number?
Does your tractor have the straight shifter or the curved one?
How many lines come out of the bottom of the oil filter housing base?
These question will help figure out what engine you have in that tractor.

you  probably have a newer 226 cam that requires a press on gear.

If your new cam did not come with the timing gear installed, you just need to get the proper press on gear for your new camshaft. Any WC/WD/WD45 cam will freely interchange between models including the timing gears that all have the number of teeth on any of these engines. The cams all have the same lobe profiles as well.

This method doesn't always work. I have my Grandpa's '57 WD45 and at some point in it's life the WD45 block cracked and he put in a WD block. I think he put the WD45 internals in it, he always used a 3 bottom plow behind it and I still use it and it has no problem pulling it in hard rough ground.
