Hey All! My D17 Series 1's oil filter bracket is weepin' a little oil, right between the bracket and the block. Is there anything special about the gasket, or how that fits together? Is the control orfice in the bracket (putting gasket under high pressure) or in the block (putting it under low)? Is this a common situation? |

| Clamp the base in a vise where the filter seal touches and use a good flat file to make the base flat against the block. Use good goo on both side of the gasket. Low/no pressure from the base to the block. |

| As the Dr said I have never seen one that wasn't warped and the fix is to file it flat. For the hand challanged lay a full sized sheet of about 220 grit paper on something flat and make circle motions with the base until your cutting all the way across. Whatever material you use ifor a gasket it should not be thick. I use 1/16 rubber impregnated cork and no goop myself and snug on the bolts is all it takes. |

That's a pretty common problem Dave. Sometime in the last year or so, somebody posted a picture of their fix for this. I believe they filled the hollow area on the back side with an epoxy material and then filed it flat. It stiffens the bracket up some. I had a heck of a time with the CA. The block isn't machined on the CA, just plain casting and evidently not real flat.

If the D17 is similar, here was my fix on for my B oil filter base. I faced the filter base with a mill file, cut a steel plate to match the filter base, cleaned the filter base recess, filled with JB weld, bolted together to dry, smoothed the edges with a mill file, painted and installed. You have a great gasket surface, and it won't drip a drop.
The base as it came from the factory with the recess in the back, and little gasket surface was not AC's best idea.

Ahhh... yeah, that IS kinda hokey. Well, I'll substitute the mill-file for a Bridgeport, but I can fill the cavity and cap it with a steel plate. I take it the same or similar part was used on the B/C and WC/WD engine as well? |
