I was wondering what kind of population you are able to plant with an old Allis two row planter. I'm wanting to plant some sweet corn with it but I dont know what I can expect to be able to get out of this planter as far as population. When I had one I set it that a seed dropped per every spoke on the drive wheel, about 9 inches apart or about 21,000. I would turn the drive wheels by hand in the shop on the concrete floor to test.

I found this formula:
Plant population per acre is equal to: [43,560 ÷ (row spacing in inches ÷ 12)] X plants per foot of rowI'm planting on 30s: 43,560/(30/12)=17424 According to my book a 10 tooth driven sprocket and a 12 tooth driving sprocket will be about 13 inches per seed. So: 17424 * .92=16,030 plants per acre. At least I think thats right.------------- Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. |
