I'm wandering off topic here, sorry about that, but I like these early pics. Here is a pic of
a plate steel spiral casing (commonly referred to as the scroll) for 70,000 horse-power Niagara Falls hydraulic turbine unit at the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company erecting shop. The casting inlet diameter is 15 feet while the overall diameter is 50 feet. The plate thickness varies from 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches. Note the automobile in the lower right corner for scale.

Larry,
Being a career draftsman I marvell at the geometry of the curved and tapered shape of the steel parts and back then the parts were drawn out probably with a T-square and other hand drawing tools on vellum paper. I don't think drafting machines were even available at that time.
