I had my crank shaft mic'd and it is perfect standard size. All shims were gone from engine when I tore it down so I made new shims. I installed new  bearings and stacked shims until I got 2-3 thousands clearance with plastiguage. Are you supposed to file new bearings to fit, or just shim to get proper clearance? Repair book says when installing new bearings install standard shim pack of 4- .0025. I have approx .010 worth of shims ad 2-3 clearance is this ok? Thanks,JM

I shimmed up a v8 Chevy one time and I compensated for the shims by taking off a few thousandths of the bearings with a file. I don't know if this is the correct method but it worked. you want your bearings to be round not ovaled.  You also want to remember to plastiguage both sides of the bearing to get a accurate reading.
