The previous owner on my new D17 IV (12V, pos ground) had the battery hooked up backwards to negative ground. As far as I can see, it wasn't converted to positive ground, but had been run that way for a while. I installed a new battery using the correct positive grounding, with new cables, and clean connections. It is not charging.

I will try to polarize the generator by momentarily touching the Batt and Gen connections on the regulator, to see if that helps. If not, is it likely that the regulator or generator has been damaged by running it the wrong way previously? If so, is it likely I can fix the regulator, or if I buy a new one, can it be a common 12V neg ground or do I need to buy a specific regulator for a positive ground? I assume that would be harder to find and more expensive.

Chances are one of the contacts in the regulator is stuck. Disconnect the battery, remove the VR cover, check the front contact to see if it is stuck. HTH.

All it takes to switch the charging system polarity is rev the cables, rev the wires on the ammeter, and polarize. If it was run with backward polarity it could have let the smoke out of the generator, regulator, or both.

You HAVE to polarize before starting the first time after swapping the polarity or you damage things.

Would you also have to turn the coil 180 degrees?

ground the field post to the gen and you should get charge by taking reg out of circuit. If polarity had been changed then yes the proper + or - should be same as bat is for ground.

Reverse polarity will cause point to overheat or pit on one side.
