How do i take apart the rearend pinion bearing on my 1958 D17? Do I need to take off the tires and work my way in on both sides on the rearend or is there another way?

In a nutshell.....YES.  You don't necessarily have to remove the wheels from the axles, but the axle housing must come out each side, and it would probably be easier to have the big bulky heavy tires and rims off, for alignment purposes.

Are you talking about large bearing at outboard end of Trans pinion shaft? If so, you have lots to remove before that is exposed. Split tractor, remove transmission gears/shafts, finals off, etc, etc.

I was thinking the same thing Chris, but the more I look at the manual and the parts book, I think a guy could remover the axels, the differential, and pull the shaft out the back, while a guy lifts out the gears from above one by one, since the top shaft in the trans is not solid, it is two pieces, the rear shaft sits in a pilot bearing in the front shaft.  I am not sure this approach would work, but it saves spliting the forward portion of the tractor, rather than opening up the front AND back halfs.  The only thing I can see that may prohibit this, is the rear pinion bearing lock ring, and nut, possible the gear bushing lock pins.
