Sad but true! I was looking forward to a nice simple brake job on the old WD45. Believe it or not she had the original brakes yet. I figured this out when I saw the brake pins did not have any paint off of them and were really rusted in there(big surprise). It all started when I pulled the covers off and say the axle seals were leaking some and there was oil in around the brake area. While taking off the left wheel I found I had a final drive bearing going out as well as a leaking seal, the other final drive axle is leaking some too but not as bad as the first, but will be replaced while I am there. When I pulled the diff carrier off on the left side to remove the seal I was brought to the attention that the carrier bearings were pitted and needing replacement as well! While the wheels are off I am also freeing up and repairing the wheel eccentrics. Where does it stop! lol Last year I overhauled the engine (first time as well), rebuilt the hydraulic pump and replaced a few pto gears, and replaced many gaskets and seals. I'm hoping after this that the old 45 will be good for another 50+ years! lol Had to share. Jim    |

Brakes? who needs brakes anyways??? Not sure but I think the tractor is just making excuses to sit inside the shop?? ------------- Unless your are the lead horse the scenery never changes!! |

I know it takes a while, and some money, but if you are like me, you will feel readly glad you didn, when it's done, and will know it was done right. My D17D started out as a simple head gasket. So far it's turned into a complete rehab from the flywheel forward. The the thing under the generator is actually a home made generator bracket. That B is a 1940 and did not have the bolts in the block for the generator mount. I am in the slow process of converting it back to a hand start B. I am planning to have it match up to my 1940 40 combine. Jim |
