Tuesday and Wednesday? The ground may be dry enough by then to do some no-till corn. Rain in the forecast after that and it's still pretty chilly. But, the long term forecast has highs in the 60's and lows near 50 which I think would be OK. Right now it's 55 and supposed to get down to 32 tonight, 30 tomorrow night and 34 the night after. After that should be in the mid 40's and going up. What do you think?

check the maturity trait of your seed if you have time for it to reach maturity then you should be all right, i have planted corn as late as 10 june here in ky and made a good crop, and it might be that late this year if this rain does not quit

I have seen the BTOs put in corn in April that takes three weeks to sprout. I like to wait till it warms up. But we can plant all our corn in one day

The noon farm guys on WHO radio in Des Moines were talking to a farmer from the Grinnell Ia area and he said that you shouldn't plant corn until the leaves on trees are the size of a squirrel's ear.

may 1st has always been my target date to plant...however, i cannot afford to replant if the ground is to cold, and wet! as it is now! i will wait a few more days for the ground to warm up abit more! been there done that=planting to early when conditions are not right! i have seen some planted ground, the corn has been in for over 3 weeks now, still no emergence!

We are so far behind it is not funny. We still need to seed our oats/alfalfa, been too wet. Never planted it this late. After that we will plant corn on tilled ground, it is 108-113 day BMR corn for corn silage. We will wait for warmer weather on no-till ground. I will plant it when I'm in the area and conditions are right. I have no tilled corn into a field that had manure spread on it heavy. The guy planting it said where there was a big chunk of manure there was ice in it! It all emerged OK, was a little slow but yielded well. If you have alot of acres to cover or a few acres but a small planter, I would start. If you can plant your corn in a couple days to a week, I would consider waiting. This advice is free, and you get what you pay for!
On a side note, we are considering switching to a shorter day variety corn. We usually plant 100-103 day corn (30 minutes N of Madison WI). This year is reminding me of the high drying bills of 2009.

Corn really needs sustained 56F soil temperature to germinate and grow. I've noticed over a few decades that corresponds really close to OAK leaves the size of squirrel's ears. Not any tree, but pin oak was what I compared it to. There's no way soil temperature is going to be as warm as 56 overnight if the air temperature isn't that warm for a few days, average. Then when up corn growing degree days are computed as the average (daily high and daily low) temperature minus 55. No degree days if the average is less than 55. Not goinig too get growing degree days with 56 high and 34 low. My tenant at Ames told me today that he's had 20 growing degree days in April, about half normal.
You can plant now, but if the ground is wet like most places you are wasting seed and will have to plant again as the seed in the cold wet dirt will simply rot, not sprout.
The only tree with leaves in my yard is an Ohio buckeye. The walnuts are barely swelling buds and the ash started but hasn't expanded buds in a week. I don't have any oaks in my new yard.
One other old timer's test of soil temperature was to drop your pants an drawers and sit bare on the bare ground. If its comfortable, the ground is warm enough.

Now that you say that, I think that was what the guy said on the radio. The only tree in my yard that doesn't have leaves on it is a Sycamore. The maples and chinese elms have lots of good sized leaves on them.

today's corn seed needs at least 52 degrees soil temp. At least that's what the agronomist said on the radio last week and we aren't very close to that yet. He also said that the previous week the soil temp actually drpped and that was very unusual for April.

All I heard on the big show was "tree leaves." I don't think it got narrowed to oak tree leaves. I'd call them but they are hard to change their spiel once they pick up on one and I can get along without tilting at that windmill.

Dad always talks about when the barn swallows return being the optimal time to plant corn. I don't know if this is fact, but I saw a couple of them (probably scouts) while planting the last couple of days. I wish it was warmer, but the calendar is showing that it is time to get the corn in the ground. When the soil temperature is perfect again, it might be too wet to do anything about it. I just hope this weather pattern gets straightened out soon.
