Pretty sure it is going to be a series I, but what is the serial number? This will tell you if it is the old sytle series I, or the newer style Sereis I black bar grill. Series II started in 1960 at s/n 32001.

That makes it an orrigianl series I, not the black bar grill, that change was at s/n 24001.

Don't want to high jack the post but it got me to thinking. Orange Blood, could you tell me if the black bar is rarer then the other 59s? I have a black bar 59 d17 d but assumed it was nothing special.

Had to go out and look at my ser. # out of curiosity. Ser. # 24042D. According to your info on the break in numbers that would indicate I have the 42nd. black bar made. if that's correct, it makes me a little happier I bought the old beast.

According to the AC Bible the D17 series I were from S/N 1001 - 23363, and the Black Bar Series I were from S/N 24001 - 31625, so just by the numbers it looks like the black bar Series I were just under a 1/3 of all Series I tractors, but I wouldn't call around 7600 tractors "rare" Both black bar and non-black bar were produced in '59, I owuld have to do some more digging, to find out how many of each type, if that information exists, others may know, but I will look.
In your situation, I would say you have a very nice early black bar, in that it was probably one of the very first diesel black bars, as the numbers were shared. All of the previous 42 could have been diesels, or none of them, and yours is the first, I wouldn't bet on it, but it certianly has a good chance of being one of the first say 10-15 diesel black bars. :-)

Did a little more reading, and according to the book, there were a total of 11,052 total D17s made in '59, of that 2,125 were diesels, that means aproximately one in every 5 tractors were diesel in '59, so with some speculation I would say that you have around the 8th or 9th black bar diesel made. Remember there is no record that exists to my knowledge that proves this out, but statictically speaking, it would be plausable.
Enjoy

Hey Junkman,
If you ever see a CA coming out of the extreme SE corner of Kansas, from a guy named Hilderbrand headed for scrap, let me know. I will make it worth your while. I completely overhauled that 'ol girl, one summer working away from home at the coffeyville refinery.
