Which decals are the actual correct ones? I have seen the D-17/D-15 long decals that have the aluminum and black trim around the letters and the outsides of the decals. Then I have seen them with no aluminum. Just black letters and black trim around the decals? Which one is right?

1965 D17 Series IV

They came both ways depending on the year.  I would guess that they made the change somewhere in late 1964 or 1965 prior to changing the font of the ALLIS-CHALMERS altogether on the later D-series models.  My Grandpa's Series III D-17 had the box around the ALLIS-CHALMERS decal, and my Uncle David's Series IV D-17 did not.  I don't know the serial number or year of my Uncle David's D-17.

Here's a color photo of Uncle David's D-17 that helps see it a little better.  His D-17 still has the five bolt rims.

The long decals are for series III & IV D17 only, the D19 had similar decals but with the silver. My series IV D17 with original decals is only the creme & black. I think some companies make all their decals like the D19.

I think the series III D17's had the black/metallic box around the Allis-Chalmers and the series IV did not. Don't know about the D15's.

Series IV D-17's came both ways page 89 in Norm Swimford's book shows both decal variations.  I'm not real sure on the D-15 but I would imagine they followed the same decal pattern.  Like I said I'm betting they changed the style somewhere in late 1964 or 1965 but I doubt anyone knows the exact date for sure.

Nobody was even asking about metal name plates?  Austin was asking about decal varations in the later D-series concerning some of the lettering on the decals and the trim, not the metal name plates.  The varations that Austin is asking about in not noted in Norm Swimfords book from what I have seen.

Yea...I am not asking about name plates. I know the difference in that.

All D19s I've seen have the silver on their decals. Since the D19 was built from 61 to 63, I would speculate the series IV D17 changed in 64 to match the new 190 graphics.

I have a neighbour with a D-15 II serial 15000 (63) with silver around the name on the long decal that is the same as the D-19 and looks like its made to look like the metal plate.
I have a D-15 II serial 23xxx (67) and a D-17 IV  (66) that does not have the silver around the name.
