Dear friends,

Is the generator mounted pump usually the problem when the steering doesn't work at all, even at high rpms? If you disconnect the drive belts, should there be resistance to spinning by hand the generator shaft? Would using heavier fluid help temporarily? Is it possible for the intake to get plugged up? Thanks.

Ron

Have you checked the fluid level? There is a small amount of resistance you can feel spinning the gen by hand. If it was working fine and just stopped all at once, it could be the coupler between the pump and generator shaft. Over the years, the splines on both the pump and generator wear and can strip eventually. Norms Toys has new couplers that fit a little tighter, at least the one I got from him did on mine.

There is a screen on the inlet in the bolster. You can remove it by taking the inlet pipe off and unscrew the fitting in the bolster. The screen will come out with it. You'll need to take the radiator off to get at it.

The fluid level is fine, but I never thought about there being a coupler that could wear out. If you crack open the pump outlet a little while the tractor is running, should there be a leak if the pump is turning? Otherwise, how do you tell if the pump is engaged with the generator shaft? Thanks for responding.

That's what I wondered about. If the return is gravity, it wouldn't take much of a wad of crud to block that screen. If the coupler splines turn out to be OK, I'll try your idea. Thanks.

Slide the pump off and look at the splines. The inlet side of the pump is above the reservoir in the front casting. A leak in the inlet side may not actually leak oil and allow the pump to only suck air instead of oil.

Brian and Norm(ind),

You got it right! Not much splines left. I understand there is some kind of retro-fit coupler to repair this situation. Or could one drive some kind of pin through the shaft (drilling through the case)? Thanks to both of you for troubleshooting this.

Call Norm. I got a new coupler from him for mine. You're not going to be able to drill and pin anything. All parts involved are hardened.
