SO MY 170 GAS HAS STARTED THIS THING WHERE THE LIFT, LOADER ARE SLOW SOMETIMES NOTHING, AND THE STEERING FEELS LIKE IT CATCHES. THE LIFT WILL WORK FINE WHEN U TURN THE WHEEL AND THIS CATCH HAPPENS. IT MAKES A WHINING SOUND WHEN IT CATCHES. PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS A VALVE STICKING SOMEWHERE AND NOT THE PUMP. HAVEN'T HAD THIS TRACTOR LONG AND HOPE I DIDN'T GET STUCK WITH SOMEONE ELSES PROBLEM. ALSO WHAT TYPE OF FLUID IS SUPPOSED TO BE USED? THANKS, GOD BLESS

Is the hydraulic system FULL of fluid?? Dipstick is located to the left of the gearshift and is threaded into the case. With eng off and loader down the oil level should be half-way up on the stick. I'd also recommend removing the cotter pin on the dipstick and throwing it and the check ball away. Also remove the very top cover of the dipstick and pull out the steel wool and perforated disc and clean out all the rust so it doesn't create a vacuum in the hydraulic compartment causing your problem. Where is your hydraulic pump located?? if ahead/under the radiator, I'd suggest making sure every hose clamp on the suction tube is tight so it doesn't suck air. If you're full of oil (universal hyd fluid) and dipstick breathes freely and all hose clamps are tight on the suction line, I'd guess your pump needs to be resealed. It will still work, but may have a problem loosing prime at times.

fluid level is good but looks milky. There is a pump under the radiator but i thought this was the steering. the main pump is in front of your right foot if sitting on tractor. What fluid should i use? and should i have both pumps checked out?

Change the oil...two drain plugs and a filter and take s5 to 6 gallons....Universal hyd fluid like I said...if there's a pump ahead of your right foot, there isn't one under the radiator.

ok thanks. so have the pump checked out, change the oil, i guess that is the steering assist up front . do i need to have that checked as well?

Why don't you just change the hyd oil and filter and actually use the tractor for a while.....it will probably work fine other than an occasional priming issue when the tractor sits overnite....and make sure the dipstick breather is clean and open. Don't worry about whatever you think needs to be looked at under the radiator.

Gee whizz thanks doc. For your info I know what's under the radiator and I use my tractor everyday. Just wanted to see if someone who called themselves a doctor really knew what they were talking about. Allis chalmers are for people who can't afford JOHN DEERE. true friends only let friends drive JOHN DEERE. Have a great day.

OH Boy, sounds like a frustrated JD owner driving AC? Dr. knows the equiptment, just trying to help. Can't imagine your tractor has 2 pumps, you probably are seeing a Hyd. cylinder that operates the tie-rod to steer the machine. That 170 is one the best sized, stout 60HP machine you will ever find, if only machinery built today was as good. Best advise is [ if you decide to keep, maybe trade to good AC home?] is buy a AGCO/AC owners manual and educate yourself on how this equiptment was built and suppose to be run/serviced. Parts book is next, refer to sections and see how it is put together. Good luck.

Hey Todd, you come on here looking for some help and sound like you just purchased this tractor and are having problems with your hydraulics, and then berate me for telling you don't worry about what's under the radiator, because that isn't your problem?? Well, I'm telling you....what's under the radiator ain't your problem. Focus on what you were told to look at. Have a nice day by yourself Todd!!
