My riding mower blew up last week. Now I have a new inspection window on the motor.  I don't really understand this failure, I changed the oil every two or three years, only mowed my 45degree sideways hill twice per week, only towed my AC B to the sandblast area on nice days, only hit a couple of rocks ....

| There is a engine my barn like that, except the block doesn't have the hole in it!. I don't know what happened to this engine, someone said the OHV parts sometimes would fall off, and was a easy fix, fellow I got it from thought it had a more serious problem. |

| That looks a lot like the 17 horse motor I just changed the oil in on my neighbors Craftsman 42" mower. At least without the after picture. While reading your post I was going to ask if there were unusual signs before it happened but I guess you already answered the question. LOL |

look at the Honda engines, have a oil filter and low oil shut off .. that way you can forget to mantain it longer before it blows. ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. Only changed the oil once every 2 or 3 years? I never let the oil in mine get dark. B&S last I knew recommends change oil every 25 hrs. A friend used to have a mower repair service. At least once a year he would go on repair calls because "my mower just quit" He'd check the oil, empty. Ask, "when did you last check the oil?" "Oh, you have to put oil in it?"

Well least on my cast iron block Techumsa first time it siezed up when kid was mowing without checking oil I was able to etch the stuck rod material off the crank with caustic soda. crank was not hurt. Rod was rough so took a brake hone and smoothed it out then I miked it , took a little off the lower cap and ran hone again until I got oil clearance right. ran for two more seasons before it gave out. ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. Many years ago when I worked in a lawnmower shop, at least twice a year someone would bring a new big box store mower in that "Just quit". It was always obvious, no oil before it quit. Oil was then added after the fact. I once had a John Deere 317 that smoked (I prefer Non-Smoking tractors). I sold it to a neighbor As-Is and told him that it needed rings or more. He blew it up and asked if I would rebuild it and said he would pay for parts and my time. I agreed and he towed it over to my house. I opened the hood and saw part of the camshaft laying next to the engine. I took the cam back down to the neighbor and told him that I found the problem and handed him the cam. He said "Boy you sure took that apart fast". I replied "That's the problem, I didn't take it apart yet". | the 16 hp kohler in my 716 did that once. I had just bought it used from a dealer, and it suddenly started not running worth a hoot . I loaded it up an took it to dealer. next day he calls me up an told me he thought he had it fixed and took it out to run it around the building and it blew up... cracked like a shot. it looked about like that. I never did know what exactly happened |

That engine must have been "made in China". Obviously defective from factory! ha ha ------------- Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it? |

I've got an engine that is just the opposite. No matter what you do to it, it starts on the first pull. It's a Tecumseh on an OLD troy built tiller. My Dad bout it wore out about 20 years ago. I told him for ten years, it needed a valve job. After Dad passed, my brother loaned it out and got the valves cleaned up and re-gapped. Now when you bury it in the dirt and the governor kicks in, it blows oil out the valve cover so bad it makes the right tire wet with oil in about 20 feet. I might just have to pull the piston and put some rings back on it this winter.

| I just picked up a used mower with a blown 25hp Kolher.No holes but both rods are sheared off against cyl wall after they burt/broke off the throw and it came back around.Drain plug hasn't been out and there was about a cup of oil inside.It too came from the"get on and go!" crowd. |

this past summer I had some straw that was a little to wet to bail but we never got weather to get it dry so we raked it around for 3 weeks. Big windrows out of the combine and we couldn't use the V rake so we used a couple old sidebar rakes and got to run the little Ford 4000 gas and the Allis D15 a little.
The neighbor and I were driveing the two little tractors down the road to go rake one afternoon, I had my radio headphones on and the little Ford is faster than the Allis on the road, the Ford started to slow down and labor, I leaned over to look down at the carb for some reason and about that time cast iron pieces, rod berring shells and a cloud of oil and smoke came out the side and went past my head.
I never even backed off the throttle, figured it was over with anyway so I may as well try and make it to another neighbors yard. We made it but the noise was terrable and a pretty intense shower of sparks comeing out the side hole as the crank was wipeing the rod. The neighbor behind me on the Allis was laughing so hard he spilled his beer when he seen the parts fly out and me turn around and smile.
Another time with the WC pulling tractor I wound it up to take off and it stuttered, and died, no spectacular show, just a bulge in the block and a bunch of wate and oil came out the bottom. Valve broke in the keeper grove and wiped out the rest of the engine. I managed to save the flywheel and cylinder head. I had good automotive valves, but for some reason the broken one was dark colored across about 75% of the break, may have had a flaw in it when the tips were hardened or something.
