Ok folks slowly but surley getting the 226 back together.  It had to go on the back burner for a while, to fix other engineS.  Anyway, when i got my d17 a couple of previous owners ago blew the governor weights.  Previous owner didnt fix it, I am though.  Anyway the front cover got the bottom lip broke on it and bits and pieces got ran through the engine.  I saw a front cover on ebay that looked like mine being sold an "allis chalmers front cover"; bought soly on a picture, got it for $20.  did a side by side comparison with mine.  i had to enlarge 2 holes, and change out the governor levers. I have come to the conclusion that this cover came off an older model wd/wd45.  I know its not original, but i have it and im gunna make it work.

The front seal is different, herein lies the prob.  my seal kit has a "typical" seal that would go in my original cover, and also another longer  steel colored looking seal that incorporates a felt like ring in it with the ribber seal.  I believe the second seal i mention is what i should use, right?? as the other will not fit. I also have 2 white colored  felt like halves, where these go??  Also have a couple of round rubber like seals that are about 1/2"-3/4" diameter, where to stick these??  Finally, my water pump "growls" when i spin it by hand and i can feel play in it.  I thought i read of somebody rebuilding theirs at home.  Anyone got any info on that.  Did a quick search and came up with nothing.  Is a there a bearing/seal kit available?? Thanks for all the info.

The front cover sounds like a wd which don't have the two ears in front to support the front mount (where the two 1/2" bolts are)
The two felt like halves are rear main seals. 1/4" wide for WD 1/2" wide for D17.

You need a press to install the new seal with the shaft/bearing assy. Replacement pumps are readily available.

Reman pump is usually almost as cheap as repair kit and you don't have to worry about busting the housing or impeller. Can be simple or make you say words you didn't know were in your vocabulary! In other words...not worth the trouble.

We rebuilt a leaking water pump on a 59 D17. We got the kit from an Agco dealer and if I recall correctly it was around 50 or 60 dollars. It came with the bearing and shaft assembly, a seal, gasket, snap ring, and four copper washers for the back of the housing-I might be forgetting something. What it didn't have, however, was a snap ring to hold the pulley on.
