Finally got done with a prototype alternator/power steering pump I needed for my D17 D. When I bought it there wasn't a pump on it and I knew that would not work. so I mounted a power steering pump onto it and powered it with a drill to see if the power steering would actually work which it did. would have been nice to put a factory one back on but when I saw one on Ebay go for 250 dollars so I figured I would try and make one first. now just have to hook it up and try.

That's a great idea !

Looks like something that could be made into a kit form and marketed to the many users of D17s that've had problems related to that gen-driven pump.

I like it! Looks like it should work fine. Let us know.

I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!

I was fortunate and had all the parts laying around. the hard thing is to find an alternator that has a shaft coming out the back.

Do you know what the alt came from? I figured an alternator was out of the question with the gen mounted pump.

There should be a number on the alternator

You'll find some Delco units that drive pumps on Forklifts. I've rebuilt some units in the past that sport a pump on the rear.

How well does it fit under the air cleaner and drip shield?

I did look for a generator/ pump off a fork lift for I seen many junked in my day but actually the only alternator I could find with a rear shaft was one for an Isuzu diesel engine. the one with a smog pump mounted on the back. It is 50 amps which should be just fine for a tractor and actually it isn't much larger around then the standard generator. My nephew used to be a Isuzu man and had one in his shed he gave me and the pump was inside a old car I scrapped. I'll post the outcome once I get it hooked up. but even if this prototype fails, my mind still has some ideas. Mark

for those that are interested, I HAVE POWER STEERING. From all preliminary testing my prototype pump/alternator works good. I dug some holes with the front tires in the dirt so I figure it will work on the role. I still need to bracket it in properly and hook the alternator up, but I just LOVE that power steering. You might not think about it but it's a bear without it.
