I inherited a D17 series II from my Father.  When I was young working on the tractor the Power-Director hand lever would always pop out of high range.  The Low range always stayed in place.  My dad never thought is was worth fixing. I would like to fix this for safety reasons, is there an adjustment to keep the high range locked into position besides my dad's bungee cord?

Sounds like the rollers are worn, as well as some of the other parts.  Sounds like it needs to be taken apart and rebuilt.  At least you will know what you have then.

First thing to do is remove the high side "stop bolt"....takes two 9/16" wrenches.

The first thing I would do is make sure the setscrew in the handle is tight. You need to hold the square head and loosen the nut. Then tighten the screw. The screw is tapered and fits in a tapered hole. That may have been the problem all along.JP
