D17 III with an aftermarket 3 pt hitch.

This was the first time I was plowing with the tractor.  There is a metal plate about the size of a deck of cards that holds down the tow bar to part of the 3 pt hitch.

The forces from plowing has pulled apart the two bolts that hold the metal plate over the tow bar.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong, and how to do it properly?

You need to take the drawbar off when plowing. However it looks like your using a draw bar mounted threepoint. in this case you need to shorten the drawbar. it should have two bolts that hold the two parts together. I would not use it in your current configuration. you stand a good change of  breaking your housing where the drawbar bail attaches. your best action would be get a correct snap coupler plow. or a snap coupler adapter.

You need to shorten the drawbar. (part that has hitch ball on it)

On that style of 3 pt that bolts to drawbar it puts alot of stress on the drawbar and the mount you are talking about. Only thing holding drawbar is the eye in the front and those two bolts and plate on support. Good luck I have same 3pt and it works Ok for most things but other things its not the best

Get a SC plow,that 3 point prolly won't work with a 3 point plow.

I agree with Dave, there are just too many dynamic forces involved to make that hitch work properly. The alternative if you are intent on using that plow is to take the drawbar and bail off of the tractor and fabricate a proper mount for the forward attaching points of the lower lift arms. That bracket should be at least 1/2 inch steel.

The down side of all this is that neither the set up that you have or a fabricated bracket will give you draft control, very important to do a proper job of plowing.

So, you are left with a snap coupler to three point adapter or going to a snap coupler plow. I'd like to give you a more palatable answer, but those are your choices.

Most D-17's that I have seen have a 1 piece drawbar that you can not shorten. Wd's and Wd45's are the ones with a 2 piece drawbar that you can change the length on.

that style of 3 point hitch are not very good for a mounted plow. too much lateral movement. they are intended for light duty use, blade or a mower. What happens if you tighten up the bolts?

It appears that you are attaching a Cat.1 plow to a tractor 3 pt. hitch designed for a Cat. 2 . The hitch is acting as sway blocks, but the width is too wide for Cat. 1 implements. Things will continue to break if you don't widen the connection points on each attachment .       Bob

Just take the drawbar off while you plow or move it off to the side so it clears.  My .02

I am with Dakota Dave,  When it comes to trying to plow with a 3 point adapter there is no best way for a number of reasons, sway and positions control being two biggies. Sway is what is bending your hitch and the bad top link geometery (also common with adapters) isnt helping matters either.

I tried to use a kaverland plow that was 3 point on my D17 with a adapter hitch like yours. It didn't work. sold that plow and got a nice snap coupler one works great. there was some thing about the the way it lifted and set into the ground that i couldn't get it to work.

Is that plow a home converted from snap coupler to 3pt? I agree with the others that a light duty aftermarket 3pt isn't going to work. I wish I had pics of the 3pt I sold off my D17D to another forum member. There is no comparrison to yours. The one I sold was built heavy enough that you could pick the tractor up with it and the traction booster was still fuctional.

Sell the plow and sell the 3 pt adaptor and find a 3-16 or 4-14 snap couple plow and a set of lift latches. You won't believe how nice the proper set-up works when you have draft control with your traction booster.

Since I'm guessing you have other 3pt implements you aren't going to want to get rid of your 3pt conversion. I have the same conversion on one of my D17s and it works well for everything else, but for plowing go with either a snap coupler OR a pull type plow. I have a pull type IH model 60 3-16s with hydraulic lift , and a 4-14s snap coupler either works great.

Get rid of the 3-point hitch to start with.  I think it is the most worthless hitch ever built and get a snap-coupler plow and you will be amazed at the difference.  Phil

I have a Farmall H with a nice heavy built Saginaw 3pt on it. I tried once to plow with a 3pt dearborn. Didn't work worth a crap and bent stuff. Basically use the original stuff set up as intended and it will work for you.

Heres the 3 point that i made for my D17, and i know the traction booster does not work with it but it is good and strong.

Yep, save yorself all the head aches and find a nice snap coupler plow. Look for a 73 or 83 model with 387 bottoms.
