so i was talking about sand blasting a hood (not an easy task i know) at the local coffee shop and someone mentioned that i can just get some heavy duty paint remover then pressure wash it off? is this true? is it cost effective? do i have to completely emerse or just spray it down with it? thanks!

Sandblasting gets the rust too. Chemical strippers don't...

ok thats exactly what i needed! ill just sand blast! ok question #2: do you have a special room to sandblast the big stuff or do you just do it in the open? i need to save as much sand as i can!

I have a concrete pad next to my shop that I do my blasting on. I don't do the really large items myself. I have a blasting cabinet for the small stuff. Just remember to not breathe the dust. I think it's called silicosis that you get from the dust, not to mention the lead based paint...

ya i have a blasting cabinet also. ive just been doing bolts ect so far though. i need to do the hood now and im not sure how to go about doing it

I clean off the pad and blast away. I use my big shop vac to pick up the sand, pour it through a screen and reuse. My hood panels are too long for my cabinet too...

I use a blaster I got from harbor freight..does a good job for me. I dont have the luxury of a concrete pad outside..yet so I use a tarp spread out, then just pick it up and funnel the sand into a 5 gallon bucket, screen it as I pour it back in the blaster.

washing off the paint is never considered to be easy. And when you get a stain on your lovely bike, it is most irritating for not being able to remove it

I had two layers of paint to remove and only a little rust so I used a chemical stripper. I brushed a thick coat on and let it sit over night. The next day the first layer of paint was bubbled up and loose so I use a plastic scrapper to remove it then put on another coat of stripper. Next day I used warm water and a scotch brite pad and easily cleaned off the rest of the paint and primer. Any rust spots I used a wire wheel or the sand blaster to do those areas that needed more attention. If I had had enough compressor to run my blast gun longer/faster I would have blasted it all. For me the stripper was faster.
I used about 2 gallons of stripper for all the sheet metal.

I used, for the most part, a product called AIRCRAFT brand paint remover. You spray it on the surface that you want to remove the paint from and wait about 5 to 10 minutes. It starts to break down the paint to where all you have to do is go over it with a pressure washer. But BE CAREFUL it is an acid and will burn you. But it is neutralized by water so if you get some on yourself just stick that part in a bucket of water or run some water over it.
It does an excellent job of removing paint and the rust that was left is a fairly quick job with a sander.I got lucky that my WC wasn't a complete pile of rust.

I am surprised that no one mentione electrolysis. I have done two hoods. My tank will do half the hood at one time.
