i know im going to get a million different answers for this and many saying it is up to the painter... but how to you paint your tractor? do you paint each individual bolt or do you put them where they go then just paint over it?? all comments are helpful! thanks!

I will bump you back up and give the first general answer...depends on how 'good' you want it to look. I know you are looking for technique, I do not have that.

guess I'll get the ball rolling...

Painting is the easy part, the details and quality is in the prep !

Currently I'm d0oing a G,so all the tin(actually everything that fits,rims are fun to do !) comes off and goes into the electrolysis tank to get rid of rust and old paint,things like pedal arms,levers,nuts,bolts,etc. all get power wirebrushed.Everything gets cleaned with laquer thinner and compressed air dryed, twice,then several coats of white Kylon primer on a warm and sunny day(soon I hope).Tires come off rims,inside surfaces, once clean get 2 coats of hand brushed Tremclad galvanise(sp) paint or enamel over 3 days.

Before even thinking of painting the 'engine-tranny-rearend' section, fix EVERY leak,then clean and wait 2 days,test for leaks again.Once you're sure NO leaks, then paint on white primer, wait a day,check for leaks(you'll KNOW), then paint colour on.I do spray nuts and bolts separately,seems to keep light rust from weeping down later(fender mounting area).My tractors work here, get caught in the rain.As for type of paint, a good automotive single stage is Ok for me.None of my tractors will place 1st in show,so colour/clear is not necessary.

Just some of the steps I do....just remember 90% of your time should be on prep,No amount of paint will hide 'things that I shouldv'e done'...

I take off the sheet metal items and hang them up. Pressure was every thing take off wheel and set tractor on blocks esay off the entire tractor wash againg degrease and paint it sitting outside the barn on a warm summer day. The sheet metal parts I prime before paint. My Tractors only get used around the house so no show winners here.

I've just been using Valspar implement Paint Looks good to me and the Valspart Spray cans match. I have to touch up a few bolts after assembly. After a year of throwing chains and tools on the tractor The step and diff housing show a few scraches.. but it still looks good. I plan on painting anothe rthis summer usung the same technique. I V'e finished the mechinical repairs on it already and run it about 6 months to make sure its all fixed before painting.

Sandblasting gets all the rust, old paint, and dirt off. You have to take precautions to keep sand out of things you don't want sand in like the trans, engine, etc. The way I do it is pack grease around shaft seals and cover with duct tape. I do the same with the shifter boot and engine openings. If the sand gets past the tape, (you don't blast right on the tape) the grease stops it from going any farther.

Fix all mechanical problems before painting.

so what i have been doing so far is pressure wash the entire tractor, disassemble piece by piece fixing everything as i go. i sandblast every bolt and nut... everything. i just wasnt sure if i paint each bolt individually.... would a less quality paint on the bolts and then paint over everything when im done work to prevent rust and still look good? thanks for the input!
