I have a Model C with a working starter. The cgarging system works no more, and I have taken the generator off. Ca n I put a 12 volt battery on just to start the tractor about once a week during the summer, or will it ruin the starter. It starts right up, so it wont be cranking much.

My WD45 has worked for years with 12V on the starter. Just give a couple minutes cooling time for every 5 seconds of cranking.

I've had a 12 volt system on my C for 25 years. the started is still original. Just don't crank till smoke comes out and you'll be fine. If it don't start in 15 seconds of cranking stop and let it cool down. Delco starters used on aircraft actually have a published cool down requirement. after 10 seconds wait 30 seconds. after a second 10 seconds wait 10 minutes after a third 10 seconds wait 30 minutes and contact a mechnic.

Thanks guys. 1 last question. When hooking up the 12 volt battery, do I ground the positive, just like the 6 volt battery? Or, hook the positive to the starter?

The starter does not care if you use + or - ground, it will crank the same either way.

Consider going negative ground, just like cars and trucks. that way you can easily add a 12V alternator, later.I put a 'newer' CS130(mid 90s?) series on my D-14. It's smaller in diameter than the older style ones(80s).Has an oval shaped connector for field and idiot light wires as opposed to the 2 prong job of the old stuff.

Also if you have to boost it, you don't have to worry about sparks flying.

You don't have to change to 12 volts if the 6 volt battery works for starting your tractor. I have 2 tractors, 1 with battery ignition, that I run 6 volt batteries and the genny doesn't charge. I just charge then about twice a year. The one with battery ignition ios my mowing tractor and gets used a lot. Bob
