Is my clutch going out?  The gears want to grind when shifting from neutral (not gear to gear)....I have been able to put it into first without too much grinding, if I have a pto implement hooked up I can put the pto in gear and eliminate the problem. I don't have a slipping problem.  Is there some kind of tranny brake on these??

Eldon It sounds like there is oil getting on the clutch and it doesn't disengage completly unless there is a load (pto) on it. Mt 1 B I have to wait before I can put it into gear.

Bad pilot brg or more likely, clutch springs falling out of the dampner in the middle of the clutch disc.

Could it be a problem from sitting over winter? When I bought the tractor 3 years ago the seller included a new clutch and throwout bearing.  Said they thought the clutch was going, but hadn't had to replace.  I'm wondering if this might be an intermittant problem....I sure hope so cause I don't have time to do a split.....

Eldon, how much "free travel" does your clutch pedal have? Darrel

an "in the meantime" remedy would be to shut the tractor off, when putting it into gear the first time, start it after it is in gear, and the clutch is pressed, it will be a little more wear on the starter, but that is easily fixed, until you have time to spilt it correctly.  Of course all the safety stuff goes here......> ALWAYS be in the seat.

Pilot brg on my 220 was stuck and caused similar results.

Fired up the 190 today (been sitting a couple of weeks) and the problem was the opposite.  I had to let the clutch out a bit to get it in gear.  Weird.....

I usually have to let the clutch out some to put mine in gear. If i shift with it not at a complete stop it goes right into gear.
