Looking for ideas to insulate the muffler from discoloring the hood?   Any help appreciated.

NAPA and other auto-parts stores sell adhesive backed heat shielding.  Just cut it to fit and stick in place.  I used it to line the hood on my D-17.  I think it was about 12"x18" to start with.  This is the best product you can get now.  The original was asbestos.
