I was given another pedistal with a broken housing. I need to remove the big (verticle shaft). Can I pull it out through the top with the gear still on it? I tried to remove the gear on my old one and couldn't get the gear off. I destroyed a 3 armed china junk puller in the process. I need the big shaft to go in my original housing since the new housing is busted and has several broke bolts in it. Can I get the cork seal on the bottom of the big shaft at agco? It's the seal that goes on the spindle block. Thanks

Yes, if you remove the spindle shaft from the bottom, it should come apart.

Can I get the cork seal on the bottom of the big shaft at agco? It's the seal that goes on the spindle block.
I don't know if AGCO has them  but I bought one through work. Probably Chicago Rawhide or National. It is not the cork, but a rubber lip seal. I did away with gear oil in my front end by packing the bearings with grease.

Thanks Charley I'll try again. I do have the set screw removed. I haven't tried the gear removal on the new pedistal yet. Do you use a 3 jaw puller?

If you have the setscrew removed completely. support the casting so you can drive the shaft down with a brass or lead hammer or any chunk of brass you can pound on.

If you open this MS photo editor you can blow it up to 150% and see all the internals.
After looking at it some more, I wonder about the shoulder that the bottom thrust bearing sits on. Maybe it will separate from the vertical shaft with the spindle shaft removed.

On my unstyled WC, I took the spindles off and lifted the shaft and gear out the top.
Got the cork seal from Brenda, at Sandy Lake Imp.

I just rebuilt the front end on a WD-45, and got all the bearings and seals needed from AGCO.  And yes you can pull the big shaft out from the top.  You just have to turn it correctly, and the set screw should be pointing at one of the corners and it will come right out.  You will have to remove the two 5/8 bolts that hold the shaft with the worm gear on it to get it out of the way so you can pull the big shaft out.  I am guessing you allready removed the crank start shaft from the housing.

Thanks for all the help guys. I got some time in the shop yesterday and got both pedistals took apart. My pedistal had good bearings and tight steering but the keyway on the big shaft was shot. I took the shaft out of the new one and the spindle block and cleaned and assembled it all back. I had to make a shim spacer to get the bearing space right and now it works perfect. I need to order the seals and install them and I should be good to go. It feels good to get  progress in the right direction.
