I think that this has been discussed before but cannot seem to find the thread. I'm in the process of overhauling a D14 that I picked up. It's beginning to be quite the project but oh well. Today managed to finish tearing the engine down. Found crackes in the top of the block between cylinders 2 & 3 and 3 & 4. If this was one of my B's I wouldn't be concerned as most are cracked between 1 & 2. Never had a problem. I'll be putting in new liners so can I go ahead and ignore the cracks ? I would expect that the head gasket would seal at the top of the liners and all would be well. Any comments?

More are cracked on top between the cylinders than aren't is what I've always heard. Head gasket seals them. If it were down at the bottom where the sleeve O rings seal, then you'd definitely have a problem.

A lot of wet sleeved engines of any make will have hair line cracks between cylinders at the top. These cracks are caused from overheating the engine. Not to worry!

Depends how bad the crack is ??? ,how wide is it .Would not hurt to deck the block ! ,at least it will be flat and that will help seal gasket ..

Both my 14s have cracks on the top of the blocks. There is no problem with either of them. When getting one rebuilt last year, my engine builder calls me to tell me I needed a new block. I said "no I don't". He continued to build it and now works perfectly.
