I got a bar grill D17 around Christmas. Had it delivered from Arkansas (Ebay) to Illinois. The guy I bought it from said everything worked but they had to jump it when it got cold outside. So I'm thinking weak battery.

Had it delivered to a local implement dealer. When it arrived it was in the 30's and sure enough while it cranked fine it wouldn't fire. Truck driver said the day before it had been outside (around 50 degrees) but it started right up and they drove it on the trailer.

I pulled it off the truck and down the loading ramp to level ground. Jumped it and it started right up. Drove it around and everything worked. Shut it off and it restarted fine. I went to work and later after school "the boys" went to bring it home. Same thing, it cranked over but wouldn't start. They didn't have cables so the pulled it and it started. Why?

So I got new points and condensor from my local AGCO dealer now I'm thinking it might be a bad condensor. That didn't work, even though it had juice to the points, no spark to the plugs. So we pulled a new coil off the shelf and it still didn't have spark. When the weather finally warmed up, still no spark... we had successfully fixed it to the point it was completly broken.

Tuesday I bought new plugs and wires, the cap and rotor looked fine and when it ran it ran good. I reconnected the old coil and reset the points for the umpteenth time, but the points wouldn't arc so I'm thinking another bad condensor but just for the heck of it I changed the old points back in and it STARTED! I guess I'll have to wait for fall to see if the cold weather starting is fixed but it's starting fine now, LOL.

The new points look good, so did the old ones for that matter, but my new points apparently are junk, go figure.

It's funny how some of these old girls are so finacky and some aren't.   The WC I brought home this fall had sat in a barn for 20+ years.   Brought it home, put a carb that worked on it, and some fresh gas and a new battery and it fired right up.  Old plugs, wire, points, etc.   I looked at them but I never even cleaned them.   Sometimes they just like to get our attention from time to time.

How well does it crank? I have seen where a bad cell in the battery would still crank the engine, but the cranking voltage drops enough that the ignition system doesn't have enough voltage to fire the plugs under compression. Have the battery tested. From there, you're just going to have to catch it when it won't start and find out what's missing.

Dave, I've been trying to start the G that I am restoring. I installed a new coil, new spark plug and coil wires, new condensor, new points, new rotor and clean plugs. No spark at the plugs. Installed a ground wire to the disributor, no spark. Put a ground wire on the plug is was using to check spark, no change. I had juice to the points but not beyond. So out of desperation, I took out the new points, ran emery cloth over the old points and reinstalled. Great spark. Apparently the new Mexican made points had some kind of film or deposit on the contacts and would not make the circuit. Just my experience. :>)

'Years ago', I remember reading a suggestion to use alcohol to clean any film residue left on point surfaces due to manufacturing processing.

I never put in a set of points without dragging a clean piece paper thru them to get rid of the residue.  On used ones Ill drag the point file thru them a time or two.

My wife's grandpa used a dollar bill to clean points. He said an older bill will be embedded with very small particles of dirt and grime and make the best super fine sand paper.
