I guess I would be the 3rd owner. A jockey bought it off of a farmer way up in Northern ILL. , and I bought it from him. I think the hrs are legit. The drawbar doesnt show wear at all. I would guess the tires are original. Looks to be the original hours,2507.

good looking tractor! I wouldn't mind upgrading my 7580 to an 8550 some time. 7580 is just a little short on oooomph sometimes when seeding in hilly ground when the seed cart is full. Darrel

Yea I still have the Versitiles, just thought I would like to have an 8550 and 305 again before the price on them get crazy. I will probably use them in the field alittle. Unless I take them up to Dales like the 4w220 and leave it for 2 years...lol

Keep an eye on the CV joints and the seals around them. It would also be a good idea to have the injection pump reset to the 4w-305 settings including reducing the rpm. That engine did not like running at 2500 rpm.

Yea I know what you mean about the rpms. One question I have for you on those motors. Why didnt they just leave it a 844 running a 2100 rpms? Instead they destroked it and turned the rpms up,and added the 2 turbos, instead of the one big turbo. What was the benefit of that ?
Thanks,
IG

I think the smaller cu in was for fuel economy, I know the two turbos were to keep the parts common to the line, the one large turbo wasnt in any other farm tractor. If I remember right there were some crank bearing issues early one-all those were campaigned. There were drop box and cv joint issues too, so watch the cv joints and by all means turn the rpm down, it will live a lot longer. that is a real clean lookin tractor John!!!!!

That decision was made before I joined the tractor engineering group, but I found out that the drivetrain guys were afraid of the added torque on the transmission and dropbox. A 10% increase in torque does cut the gear and bearing life roughly in half. The 844 engine at 2100 rpm would have torn up the tranny and probably the dropbox also.
They were a little overly conservative, however and, after dealing with some of the 12 liter engine issues from the 2500 rpm setting, they were convinced to allow the engine to be slowed down and allow more torque on the drivetrain on the 4W-305.
The 2 turbos were high production units and cheaper than one big turbo. It also provided a cool look!!
The chief engineer, handling the 7580 and 8550, had had no experience with 4WD articulated vehicles and took the easy way out with the frame and drivetrain by using CV joints. I had worked on the M-M A4T's and the White 4-150/4-180 and knew that CV joints were not a good thing on an ag tractor working in dirt and dust while making sharp turns.
Between slowing down the engine, redesigning the center section to get rid of the CV joints, and the new cab, the 4W-305 was a great tractor.

that's unreal that you could find one with those kind of hours, i see 4wd's advertised 1 year old sometimes with twice those hours. wow, I see your a lot like our farm really getting into the 70's and 80's vintage of collecting. those old b's, wc's just dont cut it for me. You should subscribe to Heritage Iron magazine, there was a 8550 in there about a year ago.
