How much disc will a 7020 power director tractor handle in sandy loam soil? Dad is going from a 170 to this 7020 for tillage and knows he needs somthing more than the old 14' disc. Thanks

How about a international 480 24' disc with new 22" blades. Is that asking too much. Guy who owns it claims a JD 4440 just plays with it in our kind of soil.

corn stalks or bean stubble you'd probably be all right but in plowed ground you won't be very happy. I'd almost bet he doesn't play with it in plowed ground either. I'll agree with Dean 20,22' you'll be alot happier.

Alot of it depends on what kind or model of disk. An angle iron frame disk will pull easier but will not cut as well, where as a tube frame disk will pull harder and will cut alot better. I wouldnt go over a 20ft, depending on what kind of weights you have on the tractor. Grandpa has a 7000 with loaded 20.8-34s and duals and pulled an 18ft Bush-hog (real similar to the 470 IH), It handled it decent but he had to have duals. I have pulled a 2300 Allis 20ft with a 7040 (145hp loaded 20.8-38s and duals), 7060 (210hp loaded 18.4-38s 2 inner weights each side and duals), and 7080 (210hp 20.8-38s empty 2 inner weights each side and duals) and can walk with it. I hooked on my cousins 235 Deere (24ft) with cone blades and definetly knew it was back there. On flat ground it was good but a slight hill would slow you down. I now own a 2500 DA 26ft, It doesnt pull as hard as the Deere did. It depends on the weight of the disc and the depth you want to pull. I try to keep a bigger tractor in front of an implement that I know it will handle, that way if it gets a lil hairy I know Ill pull through. For a direct answer to your question, I wouldnt go over a 20ft angle iron frame, or an 18ft tube frame. I think you would be real happy with an 18ft of either kind.

You don't mention what spacing? 7.5" or 9"? 18 or 19' would be more in line with those soils for a 7020-we farm in NC Nebr, especially if you wanted to consider a harrow attachment. Those soils aren't the same as the MN or IL soils and flat horizon. Sure you can turn the pump up, weight it down and gut the crap out of it and pull a 22', but be considerate of your tractor.

We pull an 18' IHC 496 with a harrow for our JD4440 and it is enough when you are in soft ground or hills.
