Can the hp be cranked up? Were later Perkins engines designed for more hp? I see some 4.248 engines rated at 75 hp....and turboed ones at over 90 hp. I found a 175D that supposedly has a new engine and 75hp...would be nice if it was true....

They get the 75 hp with more RPM. Rated speed for 248 is 2400 rpm I believe. AC had them tuned down to I think 1650 to match the gas 226 motor. Their is a reason the 175 don't use any fuel. The engine is only working at 2/3 load to give the 175 full performance.

I have been around a couple 248. One in a Hesston 6400 and another in a Vermeer tree chipper. Both were rated at 75hp and 2400? rpm.

I always wondered about turning one up in a 175 to full output to get some road speed.

I see tractordata lists the MF 185D at 75 engine hp, but gives no pto rating. Funny but neither the AC175D with the 4.248 engine or the MF 185D with the same engine were tested at Nebraska.....AC is listed at 2000 rpm, MF at 2067 rpm on tractordata.

look at later MF's like maybe a 275? The power could be set higher, but not much.

Dad had a 180 Massy with the 236 perkins, 63 pto hp acording to Nebraska

My uncles that I used last year for baling hay has a turbo and I think it dynoed at 106 or 110 I don't remember wich. It still didn't use any fuel.

The little "Perkipiller" will and does respond nicely to a slight rpm bump, some more fuel, and can be turboed easily. The intake, exhaust and turbo goodies from a 390T MF (turboed 236) will fit right on a 4.248.

75 engine hp would correspond to a pto rating of in upper 60's range.
