Hey I'm new here but I have a problem.  My D17 cut off in the field and would not start back again.  Checked the gas had plenty, now since then I have walked it back to the barn because it would not start and run.  I have cleaned the carbureator installed new fuel line and fuel filter still wont start.  Installed a new coil still wont start.  Now I have some smoke coming from what I assume is the starter solenoid so what should I do?  Any suggestions are welcomed.

Let it cool, overcraking will burn up the contacts.  I am guessing that you have an ignition issue.  Give her a small snort of wd40 in the intake, if she fires, it's carburation, if it doesn't it's ignition.  Could have a short to ground on your points, a coil wire came loose in the cap, bad rotor, points came loose won't open.  lots of things, my guess is ignition, that's typical when they die suddenly.

You need to know what's missing. It takes fuel, air, compression, and a properly timed spark. Pull the coil wire out of the center of the distributor, lay it within 1/4" of the engine and carnk the enigne over. You should see a bright blue spark jump. No spark, check for power to the coil with a test light. Got power, probably time for a new set of points and condenser.

I'm wondering how you walked it back to the barn if it would not start and run?  Or is running but poorly?

I would aslo give it a shot of WD40 or starting fluid in the intake and see if it wants to run.  You need to determine if it fuel or ignition and doing this will eliminate 50% of the possible causes of it not running.

I've had similar problems with my D17 gas.  The way I fixed my problem was to spray some battery terminal cleaner into the ignition key slot and let it soak for a few minutes.  Then I spray it out with carb/brake cleaner to remove the battery terminal cleaner.  Then I give it a squirt of battery terminal protector.  This last step may not be necessary, or may be substituted with wd40.

If no spark, try a different condenser.
