They were supposedly started in 1944 at about serial #132005 but not sure when they ended. There was discussion a while back about who had the highest steel rearend serial #.

Not so much years as the ones with the steel rearendsinstead of cast.  As far as I know, no one really has any official production numbers.  I'm thinking around 42-45, the serial number ends with an "S".

One of my books shows serial # 127642 starting in 1944. 1933 started WC1 thru WC 28.

How did some 45 model year tractors end up with steel rears, and others with cast?

Were the cast iron oil pan, valve cover and final drive covers on the B/C models during the war? I assumed they were but that doesn't make sense if they replaced steel with cast on one model and replaced cast with steel on another.

During WWII we were lucky to get whatever tractors we could.  Yes, in 1944 there were steel rear ends on the WC's and that carried through till the inventory of steel rears was ended.  Could have been 1946 - perhaps early 1947.
Remember, we were fighting a demanding war with many government priorities.  Frankly, we were very happy to get ANYTHING NEW!  We got cast iron valve covers, cast iron oil pans, and steel rear ends.  Steel all four wheels, Steel rear wheels with rubber front.  Didn't matter it was a new tractor and we were delighted to get it.
Good Luck!
