Hey I went to look at a nice 185 the other day and the serial number on the front of the bellhousing was there but it looked like somebody wrote the numbers with an engraver or die grinder. They were clear but not stamped like the usual Allis serial number is. Is this normal or should I beware of this??  Maybe they did a few of these at the factory??? The tractor looks in excellent original condition. "2100 hours and original rubber to be exact". I am puzzled. Anybody have any idea??

Matt -my guess is that the torque tube was replaced early on for some reason with a factory new one w/o a serial number and they engraved the tractor number back on by hand.  Mike

Ya, Thats kinda what I was thinkin. Somethin done under warranty. The guy claims to have bought it new but owned a large farm and couldnt recall as to why it was that way. Tractor is real sharp though.

Talked to an Allis mechanic today. He has never heard of such a thing.

Howdy Matt,
I have seen a lot of mistakes on tractor serial #'s. They not all perfect, they had bad days too. I double look at some because they are original but got me wondering.

The numbers may not have been a good readable number and an enhancement was done, rather crudely.

The later 185's serial numbers are stamped with a different font than the earlier say 190's, they are not the same writing.  I guess a guy would have to see a picture to make a discsion for his own.
