I acquired an AC today and I am not sure how to tell if it is a WD or not. From the pictures I have seen it also looks like a RC. I am planning on restoring this tractor and would like to get it right the first time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

The serial number should be stamped in the rear housing if it is a WC, WD, WF or RC. The model will be indicated before the serial number. WD #146607 and later is a WD45. The RC tractors have more "shelf" in front of the grill. I suppose they have the same floppy shifter the WC uses, and no hand clutch. These are just a few things that come to mind, the other folks here might have better suggestions or clarifications.
I think that once you have her pedigree decided, "Rusty" would be a fine nickname for a tractor! I have heard tractors called a lot worse.

This is an early "unstyled" WC None of the WC tractors had factory hydraulics, and the shift lever is quite long and seems to have a lot of flop in it.
This is a styled WC. They have the same floppy shifter, but the sheet metal of the WD tractor.
This an early WD with the straight shifter. Note that this model now has hydraulics and a hand clutch to provide "live" PTO.
This will be of the 1953 WD. It has the curved shift lever like the WD45, but just happened to be a change they made during the last of the straight WD tractors
Good luck with your orange tractor. This is a friendly place to hang out and ask questions. The people here have helped me many times.

If I'm reading the serial correctly mine would be a mid to late 1943 styled WC correct ?

It's actually a 1944 and one of the early ones with a steel rearend on the wartime models.

Does it have a stamped steel rearend like this:

Or is it a solid cast rearend with a flat rectangular area for the serial number?
The one pictured here is mine, it is also a 1944. Here is a link to a bunch of pictures of it: http://home.comcast.net/%7Eold_allis/ac-wc.html - http://home.comcast.net/~old_allis/ac-wc.html

Yep, definately the truck-axle variation- look at the spring perches on the bottom!!! (Cool!)
I'd say, because of it's vintage and intention, I'd call it "War-Horse".
Show us some pictures of this war-horse!

Thanks for the comments, it was lots of fun working on Grandpa's WC. I can't seem to make progress on the RC I'm working on now though, I think I've been working on it more than two years now. No heat in the shop and snow and cold now since November, I can't say as I've gotten anything done in a few months. Cabin fever is setting in I think.

Welcome to the AC site, we won't hold it against you that you came over from the dark side. I think you will find AC's easy and fun to work on and look really good with new paint.

look at the shifter knob on the wd vs the wd-45 the wd has a straight one and the wd-45 has the curved one.
