Is there any way to remove cam gear without removing cam shaft itself. I have tried but no luck so far.

Removing the gear might be the easy part,getting it back on would be the hardest I think. I would drop the oil,take valve cover off,get push rods out,remove engine,take off clutch assembly,set engine down on the flywheel,remove pan and oil pump,push lifters up into their bore and then lift cam straight up out of block.I would check crank bearings and cam bushing condition ,oil pump wear and clutch condition too.Good Luck

Use wooden dowels of the correct size to hold lifter up without removing engine. Use rubber bands on every two dowels to keep the lifters from falling back down.

WE did it at the dealer many years ago without removing the cam. Was not easy, I think the gear was put in a pan of boiling oil and installed hot with some gentle persuasion, again it was 35 yrs ago and I dont remember all the details, except that it was done. good luck

Lonn,that procedure will work if the engine has a crank driven oil pump.If it's a cam driven pump,you need to remove pump before cam will come out.I'm not real sure what engine he has in that gasser.It may not be original,might be a combine.He should be able to see if it is a crank driven oil pump from the front view.If it is, then your suggestion will definately work.

I was able to get one off of a 262 and they are pressed on also. It's been along time ago but I used a puller in the holes of the gear I think.To put it on Is there a threaded hole in the cam if there is just put allthread in it and a pipe bigger than the hole and turn it down. I would put camgear in oven at 500 or so like one of my manuals said to do with the D17 camgear.

sounds like the old Ford flathead timing gear, press fit and in then origonal was a fiber gear. To remove: the hub of gear was hand drilled in a couple places to relieve tension from sweat /press fit, then pulled off. Then new gear hub was heated to press back onto cam.
