I have having trouble adjusting the idle speed of my D17. I have books that list idle speed from 325, 400, and 575. What should I be shooting for? It seems that if I get below 500 rpms it dies. Adjusting the idle mixture screw doesn't seem to do anything.  I assume that I have something plugging the idle circuit in the carb. Has anyone had this problem?

Yep,

I totally dismantled the carb, cleaned out all the tiny holes with tip cleaners and carb cleaner.
Then I blew out everything with compressed air and reassembled it.
Runs beautifully now.

They have to be clean for sure but remember that the engine slow idle speed is set with the butterfly stop screw. The so called Idle screw (idle air fuel mixture screw) adjusts the fuel air mixture so the engine runs smooth at the stop screw setting. You can't get there adjusting one screw.

Throttle shaft may be worn causing the problem. MACK
