I am trying to restore my great-grandfather's AC WC. Before i do the body work i would like to "beef up" the engine. How can i go about doing this? im not much of a mechanic but im sure if someone were to give me a basic idea i could probably get it done. Thanks!

First thing is get a shop manual for the tractor. The best one is going to be a reprint of the original A-C manual. I&T manuals are better than nothing and can be found at places like TSC.

The nice thing about old tractors is they were designed so the guy who was a better farmer than mechanic could do most of his own service and repair work. For parts, if you don't have an AGCO dealer near by, call Sandy Lake Imp. They are a sponsor of this site and I highly recommend them. They want your business and will take the time to answer questions. I've gotten most everything needed to restore a D17D from them.

What part of CO are you from, I live in CO Springs.

Brian is right, Good manual is key. What do you mean by "beef up" are you talking more HPs or stronger parts? Not sure what you are after.

well i basically just want it to run like a whistle. some extra horses would be nice too as well as maybe making it a little quieter. thanks for the welcome guys and i hope to have some great discussions!

Does it run now? If it does how well does it run, what kind of oil pressure does it hold? If it is stuck, then figure on an overhaul kit, you will have to get bearing sizes, and other information before ordering, some vendors on here have them, others find stuff on eBay. A little more info please?

I know that area somewhat, I have family in Fowler, and up by the lincoln, ElPaso, Crowley county line. I do enjoy that area, maybe if you need, I could come out and help you out if you like someday!

Put in a WD45 crankshaft and 4 1/8th kit, tall head, cold manifold and WD45 carb, and a D17 governor spring, and you should be up around 50 PTO HP. Really wakes the old WC up. You may need a better clutch than stock though. The rest of the drive train will be good to go if it's in decent shape.

Thanks for the idea. i think ive decided id like to keep this as original as possible. this is more of a gift for my grandfather. i am a teenager in FFA and this is serving as one of me SAE's. more than anything id like to gain experience working on these kinds of things.
