Subject: Can a WD-45 pull a 6 row planter

My friend has a 6 row deutz allis 385 (I think that is the #) air planter I can use this spring to plant about 10 acres.  I want to know if I have any chance of pulling this with my WD-45.  I have loaded 14.9x28 and duals but  I don't know if my little tractor is up to it.  He uses a 95hp tractor to pull it so I have my doubts.  It is a no till planter but I plan to work my ground up any way.  He will let me use his tractor too but I want to be able to say I used mine.  My other options are a Farmall 400 with new 15.5x38 tires that are not loaded, or my John Deere 60 with loaded 18.4x38 tires and duals

Thanks for any ideas or oppinions,
Denis

Hmm. I know the farm uses a ford 8000 with I believe it's a 6 row. I'm not entirely sure. I think out of those options that your 45 would probably be the best if it would pull it. However, with the 60 having more speeds, it might be a little handier. Does the 60 have a WF or is it tricycle? I could be wrong but I think you might come up a little short in the horsepower department but I don't know anything about planters so I"m not sure why I'm even posting....

60 is a tricycle but only has one remote so I wouldn't be able use the markers but I could live with that.

I planted several years with an IH cyclo 400 planter 6 row, pulled and powered it with a MF-135. I didn't get into trouble but when turning the planter while raised the tractor often slide the rears sideways. The tractor wasn't quite master of that planter, but it didn't get broken. More recently I planed 4 rows with a pulled JD 7000 doing no till and it pulled so easy I back off the engine speed to the low end of its power range and geared up (with 12 speeds forward that's easy to accomplish). It was very economical on fuel that way. Typically I planted at 4 to 5 mph. The last few years I carried a 65 gallon sprayer on the three point to apply 32% with coulters on the front of the planter but with the planter tongue load on the back, I had to put all the weights I had on the front wheels and only put 30 gallons of 32% in the tank. Else I had to steer only with the brakes.

Unless you have 12 volt battery with an alternator you cannot run the fans.

We pulled a 6row international with a 7045. And I dont think a wd45 will pull it and the hydrolics are a nother problem.

the only thing I know is to try it, but I'm sure you will get more responses. Our 8000 is 105 Hp. It's loaded and has wheel weights plus wide front. It handles ours like nothing. I know it's a deutz but couldn't tell you what model. It's not a no-till.

I remember back in the 70's and early 80's we pulled a AC 8 row no till with a WD45 and it didnt even grunt. I'm just asking, is the 385 harder to pull? Times have changed since then. Ryan

The 385 is a much heavier planter and it does pull a little bit harder, but you can beat the accuracy of it. But the operators manual say a minimum of 50hp tractor can pull it, i think a WD 45 could do it

I have heard nothing but good things about the 385, just wasn't sure about the pulling part!! I would like to have one someday but need to pay off afew toys first!! Ryan

I pulled a International 6row with a rake in the 70s with no problem, but the overbore 45 had dauls too.

Maybe this is a dumb question but if you worked the ground up before using a no-till planter wouldn't the planter tend to go to deep?

They have depth wheels that keep the seed from going to deep, and can be adjusted for the type of seed you're planting

I believe a 45 with duals will pull a 6 row no till with no problem, my concern would be the electric to run the fans, and a place to mount the monitor. we run a DA 385 6 row

My 45 has 12 volt system and I am hooking up the high volume hydraulics now.  I wondered about running the fan off of a deepcycle battery or if it would drain it too fast.  I have some 200lbs wheel weights I can throw on the back and I have a wide front on the 45

I don't think the battery would last without a pretty good alternator.

I have a 100 amp alternator, will it keep up or will the planter kill the tractor

It should keep up with it, thats how many amps a 8000 series is and i think what a 190 or 200 is to, they run the fans just fine

I doub't if you can make it work! Planter weighs aprox 5900# and you need at least 15 gpm flow for the hyd. If you add dry fert. on it, thats about another 1500#. I know that you could could probably work it with a 60 hp tractor though.

Here's something to think about.  The specs on a wd-45 are approx 45 HP at the belt, somewhere aroud  38 at the drawbar.  Now the modifications you are proposing will bleed off some of that power, the 100Amp alt. will take around 2 HP, the hydros you are adapting assumes a new pump, that will suck up 3-5 HP maybe depending on design.  Look at your drawbar power now, you are now under 35HP at the drawbar.  I am sorry but if the manual askes for 50HP, I don't see it working really well.  Your engine will run hot, and drink a lot of fuel.

Just my $0.02

Hope this helps

I guess I will try it and if it don't work it don't work I will just have to suffer and use one of his tractors with power steering, differential lock, cab, and air conditioning.  Man that will be awful.

Years ago my dad would plant double crop beans after wheat with a NF WD-45 ballast one set of rear wts and wts on the front. This was a 600 frame with 9 units 3 55gal drums on the front of planter sometimes to get it in the ground. some years might do 300 to400 acres. The only problem was that mom was ovwerworked keeping him in iced tea! lol

If the hydraulics are set up and you have the 12 volt and 100 amp give it a try.  I pulled a 6 row IH with 150 gallons of 10-34-00 on worked ground a MH 44.  No weights but I did have fluid.  A good WD45 on duals and with fluid would smoke that tractor.  I liked the 44 but it was NOOOO  45.  Jim

If you work the ground before you plant I doubt the WD45 will find enough traction to pull a no till of that size!!!

You are talking about 10 acres not 300, so about anything you have should pull it for 10 acres, of course a 4 row would be easier to manage. You have lots of tractors to choose from. A W45 should do as well as any of them.
