QUESTION TYPE: Colors
MESSAGE: Hi, there is a lot going on at the www.allischalmers.com forum. EVERYONE there is miffed at Valspar for their color of Allis Chalmers paint colors, specifically Persian 1, Persian 2 and the newest A-C color. We at the forum are wondering WHY you can't sell the correct paint? I have used your paint to touch up where I have a ding etc., but am not happy with the match. When a person puts SO much time and money into fixing up a relic, it is nice to have it correct. I will probably start going with some other provider if you can't fix the problem.
If you are REALLY interested, go to this forum specific thread: http://www.allischalmers.com/new/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=25443&title=rattle-can-persion-orange-2-paint
Let me know when you come up with the correct paint. Thanks, Ted
Now their answer:
Good afternoon Ted, thank you for the feedback. We are required to produce the AGCO products to the color standards that they provide to us. We will take this info back to AGCO and see if we can't get better data and color matches into their product line.

Wonder why they can't just mix their own colors? If everybody made paint to agco specs I think they would all be the same color. Even if they renamed the color, I don't see why they wouldn't do that. Guess I'm not a business person.

I think that Valspar might manufacture the original AGCO paint you buy at the dealer (please correct me if anyone knows, I know they make Deere's paint), thus they may be required to produce it exclusively for AGCO and to use different formulas for their store brands.

True. I guess that would be one of those things that if you wanted the "right" color you would have to pay agco for it instead of paying cheaper for the store bought paint. puts valspar in a bad spot but I imagine that if they weren't making money that they wouldn't keep doing it...

All Valspar has to do is use the same exact formula that orange use-to-be tractor company orders and then sell as a retoreers line of paint unless agco has patents on the paint. ...Thats just my thought.

In another life, I was responsible for a paint lab as part of my other engineering responsibilities. A color can be trade-marked for a certain product, but I don't believe it can be patented. Besides the paint itself, other things can affect the final color including the primer color, application, and fade of the original paint. I'm sure that Valspar (or any other paint company) could duplicate any of the old Allis-Chalmers colors, if they wanted to.
Agco may also be the problem and may not be taking care to provide good color chips to start with. To do that, one needs a very expensive color meter, careful control of the master chip, and a DESIRE to provide a good color chip.

When the wife and I got married one of her bridesmaids worked for valspar and this girls husband was a chemist for valspar as well. As far as I know they still work there. maybe I can just do a little diging.......... I like that restoration series paint they put out. But then again I never tried to do any matching just repainted with it and that was that.
If I am able to find wnything out I'll be sure to post it! Dennis.

I've been told that at least when the WD45 was built AC puchased paint in 55 gallon drums and there were variations from one drum to the next, so some tractors were a slightly different shade than the next. So maybe Persian Orange #1 shouldn't be a perfect match from tractor to tractor LOL.
Seriously, I've always used Allis and now Agco paint. I painted my WD45 in 1983 and I touched it up with a spray can from Agco this summer before we took it to a show and it was a perfect match. I'm with D17 brown, why use anything else?

Man. If you want a match in Valspar Alkyd Gloss Enamel just take a dry sample of whatever shade of AC orange you like to Lowes and they will mix it for ya. They have a Gloss Alkyd Valspar clear base on the shelf at most Lowes stores. They don't sell the Valspar Hardener but you can get that at TSC. I honestly don't think Alkyd Enamel is worth a hoot for finish restoration work.
I will confess to brushing a coat of Alkyd Valspar with Hardener on Garys B#751. Just the chassis cast iron. He primed it first with red oxide in rattle cans and then we primed it again PO1 Orange Mixed Valspar Alkyd. After it dried hard it got finish sprayed with 60080 PPG OMNI to match the sheetmetal.

I don't know of an Agco dealer within 200 miles but I do know about 4 TSC stores within 30 miles and open on sunday.

For those who didn't read my post on the other topic my thoughts are as follows: I understand it is impractical to want new Valspar paint to exactly match original paint. My points are why both their regular implement and restoration paint are neither labeled a specific shade and do not match each other. When I compare them to the three official AC shades they don't seem to match any of them either. Lastly the retail paint (regular implement and restoration series) doesn't match the currently available AGCO paint which is made by Valspar also. Again I am not going for an exact match, but if I am doing repair work or a shed restoration I would like it to be somewhat close and not have to guess which shade they meant to be going for. Of course none of this will lead to the end of the world; the amount of inconsistencies is just odd to me since all the referenced paints are made by the same company. Mike
