how easy is it to swap a long in for a short?

I think its not a really big deal,I'm thinkin it was kinda common when the long shoes came out to change the older machines to the long shoe,just gotta find one.I'm thinking that was the major change in the newer machines...

My experience with swaps on combines like you are proposing is that you may need to purchase a substantial amount of used parts from a salvage yard; or you must already have both machines and the short back is the better running machine?

If the later is the case, and if you are good with a welder and riveting - then its just a matter of your labor.

If the first is the case with a salvage yard, you will be better off purchasing another good long back machine & keep your short back as a backup or parts machine later.

The straw walkers & their rear tail housing being longer would present the additional frame work & sheet metal fabrication, plus bolting in new walkers. I don't know about the back walker crank position? I would image the fuel tank would remain untouched. The shoe is nearly a completely contained item that hangs onto the lower frame. I would think it must just be a bolt in process for it? Unless, the rear hanger position changed? Even if that changed, it should only involve repositioning where the hanger is welded onto the frame.

The shoes will interchange - just bolt to the hangers. If you have a side-hill blower, you will need different (longer) manifolds for inside the shoe. Obviously you will also need different chaffer and sieves.

eric- i think you are talking about something different- a m2 is old one size back through the l3- i think all the m machines had the same walkers too

i am talking about a shoe swap- looks as simple as bolting to the hangers to me- i just thought that maybe the fan speed is different for the longer distance?

Longer shoe/sieve from a later M2/M3 will go right in. Straw walker length on all L's and M's series are all the same.....L walkers are not the same as M walkers....about 1/2 inch width difference...length is identical.
