Hi all, I think this may have been asked before, and I apologise if it has.

I've just started to restore a finger bar mower (an old Ford-Ransomes). What type of timber would anyone recommend using for the Pitman coupling and the swath board?

when I made pitman arms, I used oak, as it was readily available. Swath board I used maple as it was available.

Not sure about in the UK, but usually you can find pitman arms for sickle bar mowers already made here in US at tractor supply. Maybe you could try finding one at a store like that in the UK. Just be careful using it, the pitman arm is made to break if it becomes too stressed, meaning if you break it, you probably shouldn't be mowing the way your mowing (too steep, etc.).
