I am buttoning up the WC final drive I had apart. I am confused about how it gets lubricant to all the big bearings.
The outer spindle bearing has a grease zerk and definitely runs in grease. The inner spindle bearing and the upper bearing for the drive pinion appear to run in the sump oil. There are no seals in the big hub so the grease and oil appear to just end up mixing over time.
I had 85W140 gear lube in the final sump. Is that right? Book says fill sump to plug with about 1 pint of heavy duty transmission grease? If it is thick, I am not sure how well it would get to the top bearing. If too thin, won't it wash out the grease in the spindle?

I would think 85-140 would be just fine. It should just climb up the gears while driving and drip on the bearings. I don't know if heavy vs lighter gear oil would wash the grease out of the spindle bearings or not in this case. Ever seen the Lucas oil additives gear display on the counter at a parts store?

Original book calls for 250 wt. I dont think its available any more. I made my own thick stuff starting with no 2 chasis grease and thinning with no 90 gear lube. remember there is a huge seal on the hub originally made of cork. neopreme seals are no avalible at about $35 each. asfor the big iner bearing pack it with grease like youwould a wheel bearing. The hubs have a thread cut in them to "screw" the 250 back in , dont inter change the hubs from one side to the other! HTH Mark

thanks. Biggest job on the redo was cleaning parts. Looked like a scene from Dirty Jobs sometimes. I have a trash bag outside the shop full of grease I scraped out with old newsprint.
