Alot of talk on here lately about the differences between a WC/WD engine and a WD45 engine, not only from 4" to 4.5" stroke, but also other things as far as manifolds, air cleaners, heads, plate on engine block, etc.    

I thought this would be a good thing to discuss to see all the differences between the engine and what parts are interchangable and what aren't.   It would be good information for me as I am contemplating what to do for a pulling engine for a WC and what I want to do with it.   I already have a 45 block with what I think are WC internals in it(replacement block), but I was thinking of selling it as a running engine and starting over with some other things I have.   Got a WC block here all ready to go.   Also have a line on a 45 engine that is stuck, so will have to be torn down.    Picked up a D17 carb, and also have a D17 manifold here off of a series 4 that I could use.  
 
So can you put 45 engine internals into a WC/WD block to make things look stock, or are there differences in block heights etc. that won't allow that to work.   Also, I know there were changes between the 3" and 4" heads, but were any changes along the line significant enough that a different head would help things.   When and where did the heads open up or was that well into the D17's or later.

The 45 crank and pistons fit in WD's and I'm sure WC's too.45 and up rods are precision not shimmed so handier to work with.Think the tall head showed up late 53 on last WD's same with the synchro-mesh trans.Tall head probably better but ML pankey will have to say what about that.My guess is you wouldn't know the difference in the field on a stock engine.
