Just joined and thought I'd introduce myself.  I farm about 350-400 acres of mostly hay ground and some oats once in a while.  I have about 35 head of beef cows and as of last year my main tractors are AC.  I had a JD for a while but sold it.  As my signature says I have a 1971 170 that I got from the original owners with ( they figure) about 10,000 hours on it.  A 1974 185 with dual PTO that has been here since the mid 80's with about 5,000 hours.  My latest acquisition was last spring, a 1977 185 with a cozy cab single PTO and a little under 3,100 hours.  Just found out from an oil sample that it has very high levels of iron and lead in the oil, surprising considering the hours!  I figured there was something wrong as last summer it burned about 3 qts. of oil in a hundred hours.  Other than that problem, the tractor is in excellent original condition.

Welcome!!! I know you will find the knowledge you want here.  I can't be of much help though since we closed our dealership in 1962 well before your tractors were sold new.
That said, Welcome again!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the welcome everyone!  When i get my pictures ready to post, should I post them here or in the image archive?  I haven't been able to pull up the pictures in the archive for a long time and I'd like to put them where they can at least be looked at.

Many of us have an account on http://www.photobucket.com - www.photobucket.com  Uploading the photos there and using the links they provide to post on here works best for me.  Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Brandon, The image archive hasn't worked in a loooong time. I think the best place to put pictures is photobucket.com. Get a free account set up and upload your pictures there. When you want you can copy and paste the IMG line here and the pictures will show up or you can make your page public and post a link to it so we can see all your pictures. If you upload them to this site, your image files will soon be maxed out for the site. In order to upload more pics, you will have to delete others and then they don't show up in your older posts.
Hope you can do some fixin on the 185 before anything bad happens.  Charlie

I bought that pipe from Steiner Tractor parts.  When I bought it they did not offer one for a late D17 Series III, IV or 170 so I had to cut the bottom off and slide the pipe over the pipe that threads into the exhaust pipe.  Now I believe they offer a chrome exhaust stack with threads for the later manifold.
