I always "assumed" the Mennonites was a closed sect, but I really don't know

Ask away...I can answer all your questions......
Yes, there are plenty of African American Mennonites. Mennonite World Conference was held in Zimbabwe in 2003.
Yes, it's spelled Mennonite.
No, we are not a closed sect. The Amish could be considered that though.
and Shameless, shame on you for accusing someone of such a thing. I really don't appreciate that at all, and quite frankly, I WILL NOT tolerate it.

I use to work with people that left the Amish comunity. One girl dated a mexacan guy there and got pregnant. She went back to her amish family. Thats been about 10 years ago now.

morton...that was NOT meant in a bad way! maybe i didn't word it quite well enough! but i do know of some people that have had a difficult time with the FSA office getting into their programs because of their race! and yes..they ARE friends of mine! FSA say they don't pick and chose because of race/religion/sex! but they DO! well some offices do! i'm sorry if i offended you, but like i said i probably didn't word it very good.

I worked on a Mennonite house. They had cell phones, computers, cars, trucks, and tractors. Very modern farm. I asked the owner about it and she said they have different "stripes" as she called them within the religion. All with a little different requirement. Some were closer to the Amish some not. Very nice people.

I am a member of a Mennonite church. You couldn't tell the difference between how I look and how my Catholic or non churched friends look. Mennonites and Amish likely have a shared history, but don't agree on everything or practice/believe identically now.
Here is some more information on the web. http://www.thirdway.com/menno/ - http://www.thirdway.com/menno/
Hope everyone has a good day.

Seen them and Amish at auctions. If you see them arrive, they drive themselves, Amish have to ride with someone. The Mennonites around here dress similar to Amish.
When they sell food, which I have seen them both do at auctions, Amish sell ready to eat baked goods. Mennonites sell everything and even have electric appliances to keep cooked foods warm.
All I have ever seen were pink ones, of either faith!

Guy who built my barn was Menonite. People who pluck and cut up my chickens and from whom I buy my tin from are Amish. All of them are nice people. They are just like any group though your bound to have some bad apples. But, I would say that as a whole the per capita of bald apples in those two groups is lower than society in general.
I've got deep convictions on what I believe. My friend said that the Menonite have the doctrine on straight but different sects have different ideologies depending on the guy who leads that area. Either way, for my part, I consider the Amish and Menonite I know friends and we're going to visit the Menonite church one day.

I guess I learned something new today. I always thought Mennonites were pretty much Amish but modern things such as electricity, cars, tractors, etc were allowed.

It all goes back to a difference of practice and belief between Jakob Ammann and Menno Simons, especially relating to the practice of shunning.

My son belongs to an Amish Mennonite group in northern Missouri. They have a black fellow and his family in their group. They take absolutely no farm subsidies from the government or social security either. They will accept anyone into their church that will go through their instruction classes and live by their lifestyle rules.

IndianaBuckeye and mdM1 summed it up. Different degrees, I guess you could say. Some are extremely strict, plain, "old order" mennonite, but there are others like the pikers, team, 35er's (pretty much just here in lancaster county), black bumper, and a few more. Some drive black buggys, and have steel wheeled tractors, but the majority are not that strict at all.
You would not be able to pick out myself in a crowd as being mennonite though, or by looking at my car, property, house, or tractor. There's no difference between me and you.

I dont think this belongs in the political page....A simple question was asked if black people can be Mennonites or not and it was answered....their are so many sects and types of amish and mennonites that you honestly have to ask to know.....I was just down plowing the driveway for an amish fellow today....he's a real decent guy, nice to know....I've met some amish that are terrible to deal with, and honestly stink....its all in what they believe and those beliefs go as far as to dictate what day they shower....its a whole different world really
