I am seriously considering putting a 426 out of a 7045 in my 7020.  Would it be worthwhile to install an intercooler on this engine, or am I wasting my time and money?  Thanks for the thoughts.

intercooler wouldn't be necessary until 150hp or more. what are your intentions?

I've got the one off of my dad's 7060 on eBay right now.  Looks like it's gonna go cheap.

I would be consurned about the planitaries with that HP. They are smaller than the 7045. MACK

I'm with Mack, that could end badly if taken to excess.  That combination basically gives you a 7040, which is a good tractor at 140hp, but AC put the bigger rear end in the 7045 because 145 was more than that rear end needed.  The intercooler might be helpful in a hot environment, but I doubt it would help you in ON.  That engine in a D-21 would be right at home, but could suffer from the same problems.

I thought the 7020 had the same rear as the 7045?

7020 rear end is lighter, 2 pinion Diff. instead of 4, lighter pinion bearings, narrower final drives, the PS trans is slightly different also one of the planetaries has only 3 planet gears instead of 4 and Im thinking there is a couple of clutch packs tha have 1 less plate in them, if its a PD trans. the PD clutch has less plates than a 7045 also.

So maybe I shouldn't be making the switch??

The guys at Peterson Implement where I used to work (which is gone now along with all the owners) would have strongly discouraged you. They were very conservative when it came to pushing horse power. I've always let that stick in my mind. They would encourage 7080 owners to detune down to 7060 power and rpm after some years of experience with them. Heck they discouraged horsing up a WD45. Wd's they didn't seem to mind bringing up to the 45 specs but other than that, no.

like I said, what are your intentions with the tractor? You can add power to the drivetrain as long as you use it faster, instead of wider equipment, and be expecting some failures to occur. Don't weight it up. Ed.     your right Bowser! what was I thinking! LOL!

The weakest link in the entire driveline is the 2-pinion diff and it isn't really weak, it just needs to have the rearend FULL of hydraulic oil when you're in the field. It won't tolerate being 5 to 7 or 10 gallons low on oil ( believe me, I've seen that). Any extra weight on the rear (anything more than full fluid) will aggrevate that weakness as well. The P.D. clutch having one less disc in Low range won't bother either, unless you are an operator that likes full throttle starts with the plow already in the ground (use some common sense) and the Power Shift is identical to a 7045 internally (only the late 7010's/8010's got cheapened a little bit). Now, with all that out of the way, you will have to change the radiator from a 7020 to a larger "426" sized radiator anyway, so instead of using a 7045 rad, use a 7060 rad which is 20% larger in capacity and if you choose to intercool it, you'll be prepared to do so with the larger radiator.

Gee, I don't know anybody here that would take anything to excess!

Kevin go ahead and put it in the only question I have for you is ,is the tractor a pd or ps  transmission if its a pd transmission I'd reseal it while you have the engine out and call me and I'll tell you what to change in the pd to help you out Niel  1 618 282 2477

Thanks, guys.  I don't intend to go with huge power increases here, just stay at the stock 145.  I won't overload it, only pull what you would with a tractor of 145HP or less.  I would rebuild the 301, but I can get a complete wreck of a 7045 that has had the PTO stripped out it for less $$$ than the cost of the rebuild kit.  So I figured for now, just swap engines, and go, and rebuild the 301 at my leisure down the road.  I wouldn't mind getting an 8050 in the future, so at that point I would put the 301 back in the 7020 and do a complete restoration.  Oh, and Neil, I have the PS transmission, and so does the donor tractor.
